Set the Stage for Success
3 April, 2008, 8:49 am
Well, this is overdue. I have been hinting around at a post about being successful for a few days so I suppose it is time for that. In a previous post I implied that success was not necessarily the same as wealth. This understandably got a few frightened stares and some shocked grimaces. Let me explain what I meant by that.
People don’t want to be rich so they can have money. Let that sink in for a minute, read it one more time. You see, people want wealth so they can be secure, so they can have freedom, or maybe it is so they can live in the house they want or drive the car they want. There are lots of reasons people want money, but it is never really so they can simply have money. There is always a deeper driving need that compels them.
It is better to identify that need and keep it as the goal, rather than the bank balance.
Sadly, people often pursue the lesser desire and lose their way turning out to be complete failures. Think about this scenario. A new father looks his infant son in the eye and decides he wants him to have every opportunity in life. So he spends 90 hours a week working so his son can have more. He becomes very wealthy, his marriage falls apart, he begins cheating on his wife, and his son ends up hating him. Was the man truly a success?

Success has a lot more to do with your deeper desires. There are dirt poor people who have love among their friends and family and the basic needs of life. These people will often be some of the happiest people in the world. A song I like contains the line, “the more I have the more I worry.” That really is true, and a lack of security will keep us a awake at night. The successful person sleeps like a baby.

Anyone can be successful. A great man once said, “you do not have because you do not believe.” Another great man once said, “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.” I talk to people all the time who tell me they just don’t think they can do “this business on the internet thing.” The first thing they need to do is stop thinking that way, because they are right. The mental roadblock of “I can’t do this.” Is way too big to be over come by sweat and endurance. There will be no endurance as long as there is doubt. It is far too easy to give up.
The first thing, the very first thing every single entrepreneur needs to do is believe in themselves. Anyone can do it, but they must know they can. Focus on the things you really want. Time, security, whatever it is – you can achieve it. But you first have to know you can, and never allow yourself to be distracted by the little things such as money, or difficulty. Rather press forward after your first goal and believe that you can do it.

Couldn’t agree with you more Jared. Having the proper mindset is absolutely crucial to success. Believing you can’t do something is like signing your brand death warrant. There’s no point in doubting yourself, especially when you have competition out there nipping at your heels.
I agree. Deciding that I could actually succeed at what I wanted to do- not what was expected for me to do- was one of the best decisions I ever made.
Thanks Jacob, I am sure you have seen that happen a few times.
Elizabeth, Thats awesome! Thanks for sharing that. I hope it will help some other people to follow in your shoes.
You have quoted two great men. Who are they?
People don’t want to be rich so they can have money. Had to ponder an that one for a minute, but good point!
Great Blog!

Thanks Scott.
Sangeeta, the first is a rough paraphrase of Jesus, the second is Henry Ford (who is the guy in the picture by the way).
Jared – Thanks. We all need to be reminded of this from time to time. God Bless you.
Jared-Thanks,
In this time of crisis for so many people here and abroad, there is no greater time to believe in ourselves, to know how to abase and abound.
