Always Keep Growing

My Dad always used to tell me that whenever you get a job, you update your resume and keep looking. While there might be certain things about that that I would disagree with (like for instance, making your own living and get away from the slave drivers), I have always appreciated the sentiment. The bottom line goes like this, “There is never an end to your potential and you should always keep growing.”
The Biggest tree in the world is the “General Sherman.” This tree is 106 feet AROUND! A walk around it would be like walking from to goal line to the thirty yard line on a football field. In case you are missing the point, that’s a stinkin’ really big tree.
This tree didn’t get that big without seeing its share of California fires. It probably saw lots of its neighbors die from disease, lightning, fires and scores of other things that kill tress. But the Sherman kept going and it kept growing. Today people look at it with wonder and awe. Back when Alexander was emperor of the western world, this tree was just one among many insignificant, small saplings. But it never stopped growing.
By now, you could rightfully be asking what the heck this has to do with anything. There are two significant points here.
Never stop Growing
I hear from people who I think have stagnated. They get to a place in their personal or professional lives where they just figure, “this is good enough” and then pretty much hold on tight and wait for death. That is a really awful way to live. I mean, seriously you guys, you are waiting for death! The only thing on your radar is the end. That sucks.
Instead make up your mind that you will never “arrive.” Think you have internet marketing figured out? Learn to apply it to some other media, launch a social network, learn to write php. All of these things have value and all of them are worth the time it will take you to grow in those areas. Right now, perhaps you consider yourself a sapling. Maybe you are a sapling. But as long as you continue to grow, you could become the awe of a whole civilization.
Moving Forward
As many of you know, I am in the process of looking for a paid job! As much as I harp on and on about the tragedies of not working for yourself, I am hoping to do just that. I graduate from my theological / pastoral training in a few months and I am hoping to have a job lined up before then. I hope to be able to continue a little bit of the work I do now, but if you have been distressed from my month long absence, it is due to this job search. Rest assured I have a series coming on free applications and another thing in the works about knowing yourself and working in a way that fits you.
So subscribe, if you aren’t already. And keep on growing!
