What Do Your Words Say?
28 April, 2009, 9:58 am
Last night I read an article by Lorrie Morgan-Ferrero. Lorrie is a copywriter and a trainer on the art of copy writing. By the way, copy writing really is an art.
You see, writing good copy is second nature to some people, to others it is a skill they need to learn. But the bottom line is, anybody can become a good copy writer.
Let me give you a little run down, and I recommend you drop by and sign up for her newsletter for some great free stuff.
So, what is copy writing? Lorrie says, “Salesmanship in Print.”
That’s the idea. You are selling something to somebody with written words. It might be yourself, your mom’s golden tooth, or the neighbor’s doberman pincher, but you are selling something with written words.
Now, in her free report, 7 mistakes to avoid with promotional web copy, Lorrie addresses seven BIG mistakes that people often make.
I want to take one of those mistakes and address it here.
Why only one? Well, first of all it is her report and I kind of feel bad plagiarizing it. Second, She really helped me out, and I want to help her out. But most importantly, I am guilty of most of the others. This one I don’t commit.
I am Pointing Fingers

You know how when you screw up really bad you tend to just ignore it, then when other people screw up you make a big deal out of it? That’s what I am going to do. I am going to take YOUR screw ups, and blow them way out of proportion so mine don’t seem as bad.
I get to do that ’cause I am the writer.
Don’t Do This
Seriously though, what is the deadly mistake that you should never do? Don’t welcome people to your site! Seriously!
Crazy huh? People don’t care.
Think about it like this, if your neighborhood was having a “home show” and you stood at the door and greeted visitors as they came in, they would smile and act nice to you. But if you were nowhere to be found, but only left a sign saying “welcome to our home” your visitors would practically (if not truly) knock it over in their effort to see what kind of crown molding you had in your living room.
People want what they want. No one ever visits a website to feel welcomed. They come because they want something. You have about 3 seconds to show them that you have that something.
Taking three seconds to tell them hello and about your site is not a really useful way to use those three seconds.

This is a good post. I have ‘welcomed’ visitors to my site. Now I think that I have to remove the word ‘welcome’.
I have visited Red-Hot-Copy site and subscribed to her newsletter.
I agree, its like airlines when they say thank you for flying with us and we look forward to welcoming again its complete falseness, my sights for example TRAVEL HQR dont say welcome so much as thanks for coming, no welcome, no one wants to hear it your right, great blog.
